Gubbins: The Inventory Tracker

· [software]

Well, I clearly failed at keeping this blog up to date, didn’t I?

I’ve been working on an enormous amount of projects over the last year so the plan was to actually go into them, one at a time. So let’s do that then, shall we?

First up: Gubbins.

Naming things kind of annoys me, so I created an inventory tracking app and just called it “Gubbins”; it also adds that little bit of local slang flavour that I quite like. And now I’m calling everything something-Gubbins-or-other, such as AudioGubbins and SpriteGubbins. But more on those another time.

Like most other people, I have stuff. Knowing where that stuff is, though? Sure, I know where the big things are and the things that are always in view, but as for the smaller stuff? Yeah, no idea where that stuff is located, especially as I’m getting into electronics again, along with DIY and whatever else. What 3D printer filament colours do I have? Christ knows.

In comes: Gubbins

It’s a PWA application that is designed to track absolutely anything, with no constraints on what can be tracked or how it can be tracked. It’s entirely up to you.

Disclaimer: I’m now a full-on AI whore. I lost interest in the fun of development a few years ago, so I’m all about the destination - the journey no longer interests me. If it wasn’t for AI, it’s unlikely I would have many projects at this point. But AI is a thing and so I have many, many projects on the go. Gubbins, and the projects I’ll be mentioning in future posts are all heavily made with AI; note that this doesn’t mean it’s shite I guffed out without any care in the world. Take pride in what you put your name against, damn it!

I’m not going to go into the ins and outs of the application because I’d just be regurgitating what is already in the GitHub README.md, so this is more of an overview to bring attention to the project to show I’m not dead. My soul might be, but that’s an entirely different matter.

Let’s begin with Locations.

# Locations

This is a powerful feature as it does not impose any restrictions on the nesting of a Location within other Locations.

A Location is a container that can contain items or other Locations, as deep as you want, and can contain spatial and dimensional information. Locations that are 200 levels deep, with each containing an arbitrary number of items? Sure, go for it.

There’s built-in support for a large amount of presets, but ultimately those presets are just small templates that set up a new item category; an example being Battery: it has Voltage, Chemistry, Capacity, and so on. Each property is a first-class data type, with no lame boxing of the type.

Here’s a screenshot of some of the presets available. More will be added.

There’s also hardware support, including the generation and scanning of QR codes. This allows you to print out a QR code for a specific Location and attach it to the location in the real world; scanning that QR code in the future with your device’s camera will then open that Location within Gubbins.

There’s an enormous amount of features. If you’re interested, then go on over to the Gubbins site. It’s PWA, so everything is stored locally within your browser - there’s no telemetry, tracking, or anything of the sort. It’s open source so check out the GitHub repository if you want to be certain.

Love you! ❤️
